We are no longer on the path…
The intentions of our American forefathers were simple. Read this slowly and think about each part and add the words "for all" after each one. I believe that is the original intent. You could even add "law abiding citizens":
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Justice (for all) law abiding citizens
Tranquility (for all) law abiding citizens
Common Defense (for all) law abiding citizens
General Welfare (for all) law abiding citizens
Liberty (for all) law abiding citizens
These ideals and goals have been spread so very thin throughout the generations. Through the ever expanding growth and the diversity that comes along with it, the boundaries of those very ideals are being pushed into grey areas that overlap ideals that are NOT those of the forefathers. The very freedoms we hold dear and those that our Constitution is based on are being diluted to the point of unrecognizable and dissected into as many bits and pieces as there are people with opinions and no longer bear resemblance to the original intents. I could address each point above but I see no point. We all have our own opinions and take on it all. Suffice it to say I believe we are no longer on the path that we started down in the beginning. With uncontrolled growth of people and especially government, this is inevitable.
